amber pendants with inclusions

In the hardened resin of amber you can find conserved life forms that lived in the forests of the earth millions of years ago.

For one thing, you can find small animals or pieces of them as inclusions: different arthropods, mostly insects such as flies, mosquitos, dragon flies, earwigs, termites, roaches, cicada and fleas but also crustaceans, spiders and worms but also snails, bird feathers and hairs of mammals. Even a captured lizard has been found.

On the other hand there are a variety of plant inclusions: mushrooms, moss and lichens but also plant pieces from lark, spruces, firs, palm trees, cypresses, yew and oaks. Sometimes inclusions of waterdrops or air bubbles can be found.

Although the diversity of species was large in the time amber was formed, inclusions are rare. Only approximatly every 500th piece of amber has an inclusion, whereas the findings often only contain fragments of life forms. In Schlaubensteinen the inclusions are so frequent that you can find them in every 20th amber if the amber has not been searched through before. Often the inclusions are damaged. Therefor pieces with complete species are of special scientific value.
